About Lancing Brass

Lancing Brass is a lively family band on the south coast, tucked between Brighton and Worthing. We are officially licensed to The Royal British Legion and have been affiliated to the RBL since our formation in 1966, proudly supporting the Poppy Fund.

Rehearsals are once a week at The Royal British Legion Club in Lancing. Lancing Brass has a high standard of musicians but new faces are always welcome. We constantly seek to expand our repertoire and playing standards and we can offer free instrument loan too.

We perform throughout Sussex at venues and events such as the London to Brighton Bike Ride and Arundel Festival, and numerous indoor and outdoor concerts throughout the season.

Meet our Musical Director

David Martin has been the Musical Director of Lancing Brass Since 2012.  Born into a Salvation Army family in Barry, South Wales, David has played in brass bands on several instruments but mainly Baritone and E flat Bass.

In teenage years David secured a vocal scholarship to study voice at the Welsh College of Music and Drama and sang with the South Glamorgan Youth Choir. David has a BA (Hons) in Music from the University of Liverpool and PGCE from University of Wales (Swansea).

In his career as a Secondary Music teacher David has held Music Subject leader roles in several schools in the Worthing Area and has directed the Adur Youth Band and Davison Worthing Youth Concert Band.

David is also a keen singer and member of a local operatic society, taking principal roles in many operettas and shows including Major General Stanley – Pirates of Penzance. Koko – The Mikado, Claude – The Baker’s Wife.   No stranger to the orchestra pit, David has been Musical Director for various productions including Guys and Dolls, Camelot, Little Shop of Horrors, The Sound of Music, The Gondoliers, Oliver and Mathilda.

David says “I love working with Lancing Brass, they are a very loyal and hard working band and we have a good blend of fun and music making.  I have had 12 very happy years seeing the band develop and grow and I am very excited about the future of the band. Why not join us and see for yourself?’”
